What is a Default?

A default shows on your credit report when a lender closes your account because you have missed payments. A default appears regardless of how much you owed when the account was closed. Usually a default only occurs when you miss payments over 3 to 6 months, however this period depends on the specific terms of your credit.

For credit regulated under the Consumer Credit Act, such as credit debts, your lender will send you a default notice. A default notice generally gives you up to a fortnight to bring your payments up to date. Default notices do not appear on your credit report, and so if you receive one and can make the payments outlined in the notice you will avoid a default appearing on your credit report.

Whether or not you can get a mortgage will also depend on other factors such as your household income and the size of your deposit. A default stays on your credit report for 6 years. The default stays on your credit report for 6 years whether or not you have paid off your debt. Once the 6-year mark is reached the default is removed, even if you still owe the lender money. While your lender can't re-register the default once removed, you should remember that if you stop paying back your debt, they could apply for a CCJ, which would appear on your credit report.

Can I get a Mortgage with a Satisfied Default?

Although defaults remain on your credit report whether or not you have satisfied the default, some lenders will assess your application more sympathetically if you have paid off the debt.
